How Can You Legally Operate a Golf Cart on Public Roads in Florida?
In Florida, among Golf communities, golf carts can be a primary mode of transportation, especially in retirement communities. However, it’s not as simple as hopping in your cart and putting your foot on the gas pedal. There are a number of restrictions on where, when, and how golf carts can be operated on public roads in Florida. Here’s what you need to know.
Age Restrictions
A child under the age of 14 may not operate a golf cart under any conditions. A child age 14 to 16 may operate a golf cart with a maximum capable speed of 20 mph on low-speed limit roads. A minor age 16 and over with a valid driver’s license may operate a golf cart with a maximum speed of 25 mph on public roads with speed limits under and above 20 mph.
Speed Restrictions
Golf carts operated by a driver of any appropriate age may only drive on residential streets that have a posted speed limit of 35 mph or less. They may also be operated on public state roads with a posted speed limit of 30 mph or less.
Timing Restrictions
Usually, golf carts are not allowed to be operated on any road before sunrise or after sunset. In some special cases, certain municipalities may grant residents with night driving privileges if their golf cart is equipped with headlights and taillights.
Location Restrictions
Golf carts may not operate on state sidewalks unless the sidewalk is wider than five feet across. Right of way must be given to pedestrians at all times. Although golf carts may not operate on state highways or public roads with speeds over 30 to 35 mph, under certain conditions carts may cross highways and roads as needed.
